STEM Day event planning FAQ

What is the general theme of STEM Day?

STEM Day activities held in primary and secondary schools usually include the following themes:

  1. Scientific inquiry activities: Students can conduct various scientific experiments and inquiries, such as making automatic small yachts, household assistant robots, etc., and learn to apply scientific principles.
  2. STEAM creative handicrafts: Combining scientific principles and creative design, students can make small works such as Kent pipes, tumblers, and automatic breeding bottles to show their creativity.
  3. Programming learning: Students can learn to use programming tools such as micro:bit to design electronic products that can be used in daily life1.
  4. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Learn Cutting-Edge Artificial Intelligence Principles
  5. Booth activities: Set up interactive booths such as AR and mBot to allow students to experience and challenge interesting STEM-related games.
  6. Lectures and workshops: Invite STEM education experts to lecture on STEM-related knowledge and skills, and provide practical workshops.

How to effectively manage the flow of people in cross-grade activities?

It is recommended to adopt a "time-sharing and zoning" strategy to divide activities into different time periods: for example, basic challenges for lower grades are arranged in the morning, such as using environmentally friendly materials to build structures; advanced tasks for higher grades are opened in the afternoon, such as AI image recognition practice; and the last two hours are planned for mixed-age exhibitions and exchanges. The venue layout must comply with the principle of "separation of static and dynamic areas", for example, the robot competition area can be set up in the gymnasium and the programming area can be arranged in the computer classroom.

How to deal with unexpected technical problems?

Prepare contingency plans in advance: the first level is for student technicians to handle common problems, such as program upload failure or poor sensor contact; the second level is for teachers on duty to intervene to solve systemic problems such as network disconnection; the third level is to activate backup plans, such as switching to an offline operating system. Practical tips include posting a "Quick Restart Guide" on each device and setting up a "Mutual Help Repair Station" to encourage students to exchange faulty parts for reverse engineering learning.

How can students with special needs participate in STEM activities?

The task form can be adjusted according to different needs. For example, extended operation tool sets such as extended tweezers and angle-adjustable workbenches are provided for people with physical disabilities. The key is to design a "multi-channel participation model". An autistic student successfully led a team to complete the assembly of a solar car through a systematic parts numbering system.

What specific benefits does research show STEM education has for students?

  • Cross-domain capability enhancement:
A study by the National Science Foundation (NSF) found that students who received an integrated STEM education:
▸ Improve scientific inquiry ability 37%
▸ Increased success rate in solving math problems by 29%
▸ Demonstrate stronger leadership in team collaboration projects

  • Future career preparation:
The World Economic Forum predicts that global STEM-related job vacancies will increase by 14% by 2030. Early STEM education can enable students to:
▸ Explore career interests 5-7 years in advance
▸ The rate of choosing STEM majors in colleges has increased by 2.3 times

Elementary STEM courses

These courses mainly use graphical programming or tools that do not require programming foundation, and are suitable for students who are introductory to programming. Through these courses, students can learn basic programming concepts and develop computational and logical thinking skills.

Intermediate STEM School Courses

These courses require students to have a certain programming foundation, such as understanding basic programming concepts such as variables, functions, conditional statements, and loops. Students will learn text programming languages such as Python and apply programming knowledge to fields such as drones, smart cars, and IoT.

Advanced STEM School Programs

These courses are aimed at students who already know a programming language (such as Python) and are interested in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain. Students will learn AI algorithms such as machine learning and deep learning, and apply them to chatbots, robots, blockchain and other fields. These courses are more difficult and require students to have strong programming skills.

"Our class includes some students with special educational needs (SEN), but our instructor is very patient in teaching and manages the classroom well. In general, students who are taught STEAM subjects don't usually show much response, but after observing several sessions, I noticed that the students frequently ask questions during class. The primary focus of the class is teaching AI, which can be challenging for elementary school students to grasp. However, the instructor uses examples that are relatable to daily life, so most of the students understand the workshop content."
